Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) said to His beloved Prophet (Salallahu alayhis salaam) “Assuredly, You are of a tremendous character.”
A man asked the Prophet (sallalahu alayhis salaam) about good character, and Prophet (sallalahu alayhis salaam) recited Allah’s (subhana wa ta’ala) statement: “Hold to forgiveness, and enjoin kindness, and turn aside from the ignorant ones.” Then the Prophet (sallalahu alayhis salaam) said, ” It is that you should seek reconciliation with those who avoid you, give to those who with hold from you, and forgive those who deal with you unjustly.”
Good character expresses itself in two fundamental virtues: Humility (tawadu) and placing others before oneself (ithar). The sincere muslim is naturally humble, ever so watchful of his soul. The sincere muslim is even convinced that any passer-by, young or old, ever superior to him in Deen (Islam).
A true Wali ( Allah’s friend) only achieves true humility when he contemplates over the Oneness of Allah which the noor enlightens his heart. Due to this, the nafs (soul) hypocrisy and self-love melts away from the heart, replaced by softness, hope, obedience to the Creator (subhana wa ta’ala) and the creation.
those who have gained Allah’s special friendship become the most humble and modest of creatures. in their submissiveness, they love to serve others, hoping to please Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) and the delight of repudiation.
“They prefer others over themselves, though theirs be the greater need.” (Quran)
“It is to do good to all, in the manner of the sun, wind and the rain.” (al-Hasan al-Basri)
The goodness should even be extended to animals, as the story of a pious woman who mistreated her cat, Prophet (sallalahu alayhis salaam) said” she is not one of us, so she will enter hell.”
Remember that “Goodness is to do good even to those who have mistreated you.” (Sufyan al-Thawri)
